Bury and Rossendale Deanery Eco Tips

At the last Deanery Synod the focus was on eco awareness. Everyone who attended was asked for an eco-tip.  Here’s the full list. I wonder if you have one that’s not here?

The use of shop and product names are not endorsed by the Deanery.

  • Use a 3-minute egg timer in the shower – less water/less electricity
  • Don’t buy veg from a supermarket, buy from your local greengrocers – veg not wrapped in plastic
  • As a Church family bulk buy then share, e.g., toilet rolls/eco-friendly cleaning products
  • Draught excluders at main church doors or automatic sliding doors, then check gas and electricity usage before and after
  • November to March, always wear your thermal clothing and winter hat, even indoors
  • Avoid cartons and packaging that cannot be locally recycled
  • Go by bus / on foot
  • Shop at Aldi – Save the planet and save money too
  • Use ‘Faith in Nature’ products – shampoo, soap etc. Based in Bury all packages are organic, refillable and recyclable
  • Switch off church lights when not required
  • Turn church heating off 45 mins before the end of the last service
  • Don’t use artificial grass or pave over gardens, rain has to go somewhere
  • Shop at Village Greens – Prestwich
  • Always carry a reusable coffee cup and a water bottle
  • Plant insect friendly plants in your garden
  • Shop locally wherever possible
  • Switch to cleaning products that are refillable, some supermarkets stock some concentrated refills, or switch to companies like Smol who provide a full range by subscription, delivered without plastic
  • Subscribe to companies like Oddbox for fruit and veg rescued from waste
  • Use refillable cleaning products (concentrated, so just add water)
  • Only use the amount of water in the kettle needed to drink, before boiling
  • Use LED light bulbs
  • Plan cooking to optimise hob and oven
  • Plan shopping trips to optimise fuel usage
  • Use a net scrunchie in the shower and you will only need a small amount of shower gel and still get a good lather
  • Use a shampoo bar rather than shampoo in a plastic bottle
