On Saturday 5 October I went to Liverpool to sing in the Metropolitan Cathedral there as a member of the Manchester Chorale.
Way back in the 1080s as a student in Manchester I sang many times at the chapel of De La Salle College, Middleton (once on the BBC2 Morning Worship programme!) The Chapel was built as a prototype for the Metropolitan Cathedral of Liverpool, so my visit there felt like a long overdue homecoming.
We sang a varied programme of sacred and secular songs, all a Capella, including Underneath the Stars, The Road Home (Paulus), I Will Come To You (Fairnbairn), Bogoroditse Devo (Rachmaninov), and Hail Gladdening Light (Wood).
The acoustics ere amazing, with an echo that lasted a good 4-5 seconds beyond the end of the music. The audience seemed to enjoy it – we had a standing ovation!
