Like many of the pieces I write about in this blog, I was introduced to this song at a rehearsal of the Manchester Chorale. We were learning it for our summer concert programme in 2018. Imagine our pleasure when one of the Chorale members chose it as the bridal entry music for her wedding, and asked us to sing it for her … More I Will Come to You – M Fairbairn (b. 1986)
Once more I am dipping into the chorister’s staple, “100 Hundred Carols for Choirs”, usually given out at rehearsals some time in late October, and collected in for storage in early January. As I have mentioned previously though, not all carols are for Christmas, and this is another. The original “Heer Jezus heeft een hofken” is set to a traditional Dutch melody. It was later translated by Rev George Woodward (1848-1934) and harmonised by Charles Wood (1866-1926) … More King Jesus Hath a Garden – Trad., tr. Woodward (1848-1934)
This is essentially a Native American prayer set to music by legendary jazz composer Bob Chilcott. I had to learn this piece thoroughly (and quickly) for a weekend of conductor training with Sing for Pleasure … More Give Me Strength (Sioux trad., arr. Chilcott)

This article was written for the June issue of our parish magazine. Here it is for you again: At first glance, this may seem to be an odd choice for this month’s article. Taken from the musical Sweet Charity, the scene featuring this song is widely thought to be a pastiche on west-coast American hippie … More Rhythm of Life – Coleman & Fields

Stephen Paulus was quite possibly the most prolific composer that you have never heard of. He managed to fit in 11 operas, 31 symphonic works, 18 concertos and a whole host of other music into his 65 years.
The Road Home is one of his reflective choral works, which when I first sang it, struck me as deeply spiritual … More The Road Home – Stephen Paulus (1949-2014)
